Apple is known for supporting fairly old hardware with the latest versions of OS X, sometimes hardware that is between 7-8 years old. Just because your computer CAN run the new software - take Mac OS X 10.11 “El Capitan” for example - doesn’t mean it will run well. BEFORE YOU UPGRADEġ. “SHOULD I” is more relevant than “CAN I” It is tempting, but there are a lot of things to think about before applying a major system upgrade - things that may save you a lot of time, money, and frustration. This in turn allows them to push new features to a larger audience more quickly. Offering the upgrades for free has been the trend at Apple lately, to increase the adoption rate of the new software. Many users upgrade to a new operating system simply because they can, or because it’s free. Upgrading your computer to the latest version of OS X often does not have the same effect. In most cases this is fine - and fun! Upgrading your computer to the next version of OS X is not (and shouldn’t be) one of those cases.īeing the first person in your family or group of friends to have the biggest and best iPhone is fairly harmless, and allows for some bragging rights, at least for a while. Whether it’s a new iPhone, iPad, an entirely new product line like the Apple Watch, or something as routine as the next upgrade the Mac OS X, Apple’s hype machine goes into high gear and has people chomping at the bit to jump in at the first opportunity. No company gets people excited for a new product like Apple.
